Welcome back to the Studio Blog! Today, Futura's Studio is excited to spotlight a rare and fascinating piece of Italian design history: the Elmo Desk Lamp by Joe Colombo.
Designed in 1971 and produced by Forma & Funzione in Varese, northern Italy, this desk lamp reflects Joe Colombo’s innovative and functional approach to lighting design. Originally created for the offices of the Italian State Railway, the Elmo desk lamp has an industrial charm combined with the sleek modernism Colombo was renowned for.
Functionality Meets Design
The Elmo lamp’s standout features include an adjustable stem and reflector, offering versatility in light direction for various tasks. Adding to its functionality is the unique on/off switch, which also doubles as a dimmer, providing customizable lighting levels. The lamp’s base is not only a design element but also practical, as the cable winds neatly around it—a feature that earned it the nickname ‘Yo Yo.’
A Rare Gem by Joe Colombo
Joe Colombo designed approximately five lamps for Forma & Funzione, but they remain relatively unknown treasures among design enthusiasts. The Elmo desk lamp stands out as an exceptional example of his ability to blend innovation and usability with timeless aesthetic appeal. Its rarity and design pedigree make it a sought-after piece for collectors and lovers of mid-century modern design.
Italian Design at Its Best
At Futura's Studio, we celebrate pieces that combine artistry and practicality. The Elmo desk lamp is more than a lighting fixture—it’s a functional sculpture that carries the legacy of Italian design innovation.
